NYU Takes Series From Emory With Senior Day Sweep

NYU Takes Series From Emory With Senior Day Sweep

From NYU Athletics

The New York University baseball team swept both ends of a University Athletic Association (UAA) doubleheader from Emory University on Sunday, April 28, at MCU Park in Brooklyn.

NYU (23-11, 8-8 UAA) won the first game 2-1 behind a strong pitching performance from Ford Ladd, before taking game two 6-3 to take three out of four from the Eagles (20-19, 8-8 UAA) this weekend.

Ladd pitched eight innings, allowing just two hits and one unearned earn to improve to 8-2 on the mound this season. When he left the game after retiring Emory in order in the top of the eight, the Violets trailed 1-0. The NYU offense bailed Ladd out with a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth as they took advantage of a costly Eagles' error to tie the game, before going ahead on an RBI single from Colman Hendershot.

Joseph Prisco took over for Ladd in the top of the ninth and converted his 10th save of the season. Prisco allowed a runner to reach base via a one-out single, but the baserunner was erased trying to steal on Violets' catcher Grant Berman.

John Gassler made his second-career start in game two and the rookie southpaw took over where the game one pitchers left off, tossing five strong innings while only allowing one run. Gassler is now 3-0 on the mound this season.

NYU led 4-1 when Gassler left the game and increased the advantage to 6-1 at the end of the seventh inning.

Emory scored a pair of runs and was threatening with the tying runner on deck with two out in the ninth when Prisco once again came out of the bullpen and got the only batter he faced to line out to preserve the victory and his 11th save of the season.

Prisco, who saved all three games this weekend, leads NCAA Divsion III in the category and has seven more than the next-ranking UAA reliever.
