Stout Defense Keys Chicago Win at Trinity (Texas), 14-7

From University of Chicago Athletics

After scoring two touchdowns in rapid succession early in the game, the University of Chicago football team locked down Trinity (Texas) University defensively to earn a 14-7 victory on Saturday.

The Maroons moved to 5-0 for the first time since the 1929 season. The Tigers fell to 1-5.

Two Trinity turnovers in the first quarter led directly to all 14 of UChicago's points. The Tigers quarterback was stripped of the ball by senior linebacker Schuyler Montefalco and the fumble was recovered by junior safety Jacob Romeo. The Maroons took over in Trinity territory and five-straight run plays got the offense into the red zone. Senior quarterback Patrick Ryan found senior wide receiver Tom O'Neill for a four-yard touchdown pass to make the score 7-0.

Less than 30 seconds later, Trinity fumbled the ball at its own 13-yard line. Ryan immediately capitalized with a 13-yard touchdown toss to junior tight end Nathan Massey.

From that point on, defense ruled the day. The two teams combined to convert only 3 of 28 on third down (10.7 percent) with 19 total punts. UChicago finished with 170 offensive yards (101 rushing, 69 passing) and Trinity posted 205 offensive yards (150 rushing, 55 passing).

Trinity made a late push, converting a pair of fourth downs in the final minutes of the game. The latter conversion on fourth-and-one saw the running back bounce to the right sideline and run in for a 38-yard touchdown. The ensuing onside kick was recovered by UChicago. The Maroons faced a crucial third down while trying to running out the game clock. A hard snap count brought the desired result as Trinity jumped offside to give the Maroons the first down and the win.

UChicago's defense held its fourth opponent of the season to less than 230 yards of total offense. The Maroons forced four fumbles on the day and recovered three of them. The pass defense was particularly effective with only 55 yards allowed on 25 attempts (2.2 yards per attempt). UChicago has yet to allow 200 yards passing in a game this year.

Sophomore linebacker Jackson Garrey was the leading tackler with 14, including 2.5 tackles for a loss and one sack. Junior cornerback Vincent Beltrano collected 10 tackles, and sophomore defensive lineman Eddie Giannina contributed 10 tackles, 1.5 tackles for a loss and half a sack. Montefalco added six tackles and 1.5 tackles for a loss.

On offense, senior running back Zak Ross-Nash passed 100 yards rushing for the second time this year (101 yards on 24 carries). Ryan completed 8 of 18 passes for 69 yards and two touchdowns. Coleman caught three passes for 26 yards and a touchdown. Massey snagged two catches for 24 yards and a touchdown.
