From Carnegie Mellon University Athletics

The Carnegie Mellon University men's basketball team hit 13 three-pointers on its way to an 80-63 victory at home against Brandeis University in University Athletic Association (UAA) action on Friday, January 11. The Tartans move to 7-6 overall and 2-0 in the UAA while the Judges fall to 8-5 and 1-1.

Sophomore Ethan Miller (King of Prussia, Pa. / Upper Merion) hit four of the 13 three-pointers made, finishing with 18 points, one point shy of his career best. Junior Zach Howarth (Freehold, N.J. / St. John Vianney) chipped in 15 points and seven rebounds while senior Seth Henry (Fulton, Md. / Reservoir) and junior Trent Suddeth (Winter Park, Fla. / Trinity Prep) each scored 10 points. Junior Colin McNeil (Ringoes, N.J. / Hunterdon Central Regional) took care of the ball, dishing out a season-best eight assists while committing just two turnovers alongside a career-tying four steals.

With 4:19 to go in the first period and the score tied at 24-all, the Tartans rattled off 11 straight points with two free throws by Miller starting the run that witnessed three consecutive buckets from behind the arc from the Cardinal and Gray. After a Brandeis tip-in, sophomore Daniel Weiss (Marlboro, N.J. / Marlboro) hit his second triple of the half at the buzzer to give the Tartans a 38-26 advantage.

After starting the game making just 2-of-7 from long range, the Tartans turned it around and connected on 6-of-8 after the 9:52 mark of the half. That run helped the Tartans create a scoring gap against the Judges that never got below 11 points in the second stanza.

While the Tartans cooled off slightly in the second half from behind the arc, hitting 5-of-11, they shot 52.0% from the field and always answered the points scored by the Judges. The largest lead of the game grew to 21 points with 4:54 to play.

The 13 three-pointers for the Tartans is the most in a game since they hit 14 against Mount Aloysius on November 26, 2016. The Tartans also tied their season-low mark in turnovers with 10.

Brandeis was led by senior Corey Sherman's 16 points with sophomore Chandler Jones recording a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds.
