WashU Mourns Loss of Former Men's Soccer Assistant Coach Val Pelizzaro

Val Pelizzaro, a former Washington University in St. Louis assistant men's soccer coach and St. Louis soccer icon, passed away on Saturday, Sept. 28, at the age of 88.

Pelizzaro spent 42 years on the sideline as a soccer coach, including the final 27 with head coach Joe Clarke. He served with Clarke as an assistant coach at WashU from 1997-2009 before retiring from college coaching. Pelizzaro also coached at Saint Louis University and Visitation Academy.

He is survived by his wife of 67 yearsLaura (nee DeBacker); his children, Tom (Kris), Valerie (George) Ikemeier, Matt (Suzanne), Mike (Lisa), Tony (Michelle), Janet (Dan) Clark; 17 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and his sister Rose Spehr.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 1 from 4-8pm, at Kutis South County - 5255 Lemay Ferry. The funeral is set for Wednesday, Oct. 2, at 9:30 a.m., at Kutis South County, with a mass to follow at 10 a.m. at St. Simon the Apostle Church – 11011 Mueller Road.

In lieu of flowers, contributions are suggested to the American Heart and American Stroke Association.
