Brandeis Wraps Fall Season at Tufts-Deis Invitational

The Brandeis men's tennis team closed out its fall schedule with the Tufts-Deis Invitational, a flighted tournament held at Brandeis and Tufts this weekend.

The Judges' best performances came in doubles action. In the 'A' doubles draw, senior Jackson Kogan (Los Angeles, Calif./Windward School)and rookie Adam Tzeng (Eagle, Idaho/Eagle)reached the semifinals. The top-seeded duo defeated teams from Williams, 8-7 (10-8), and Bowdoin, 8-5, in the first two rounds before falling to fourth-seeded Bessette and Wei of Amherst, 8-4, in the semis.

In the 'B' draw, the unseeded tandem of sophomore Anupreeth Coramutla (Monroe Township, N.J. / Phillips Andover) and Colt Tegtmeier (Madison, Wisc. / James Madison Memorial) also made a run to the semis. They knocked off opponents from Williams in the opening round, 8-5, before upsetting top-seeded Brach and Vilys of Middlebury in the quarterfinals, also by an 8-5 score. The Judges then fell to the Amherst duo of Levitin and Ruparel, 8-7, in the semis.

In singles action, the Judges sent two players to the quarterfinals as well. Third-seeded Kogan topped Akash Verma of Tufts, 6-3, 6-4, in the first round and Princeton Carter of Wesleyan, 6-4, 7-5, in the second. Kogan was pushed to a third-set super-tiebreaker in the quarters before falling to Will Tuchetta of Amherst, 6-7, 6-2, 10-5. In the other half of the draw, senior Tyler Ng (Great Neck, N.Y. / Great Neck South) picked up wins over Arman Dave of MIT, 6-4, 6-2, and Peter Freylinshuysen of Williams, 6-2, 6-4, before dropping his quarterfinal match to Damien Ruparel of Amherst, 7-6, 6-1.

Three Judges won their first-round matches in the 'A' draw, with Tzeng and sophomore Rajan Vohra (Glen Head, N.Y. / North Shore) each delivering upsets of seeded players. Tzeng knocked off fourth-seeded Adam Ma of Amherst, 1-6, 6-0, 10-5, while Vohra defeated seventh-seeded Nate Eazor of Middlebury, 6-2, 6-2. Coramutla earned a 7-6 (7-2), 6-1, win over Alan Delmen of Bowdoin in the first round. None of the Judges advanced after their first matches, however.
