From Washington University Athletics

The No. 6-ranked Washington University in St. Louis women's soccer team opened University Athletic Association (UAA) play with a 3-1 win over No. 18 University of Rochester Sunday at Francis Olympic Field in St. Louis.

Head coach Jim Conlon picked up his 200th win at WashU, sporting a 200-37-17 (.821) in 12 seasons on the Danforth Campus. Conlon is 296-94-22 (.745) in his career as college women's coach.

WashU won its eighth-straight match to improve to 10-1-1 and 1-0 in the UAA, while Rochester had its six-game win streak snapped and dropped to 7-2 and 0-1 in the UAA.

Trailing 1-0 with less than 30 minutes left in the game, junior Ellie DeConinck scored after sophomore Jess Shapiro saved the ball from going out of bounds and DeConinck fired a shot from inside the box.

Senior Taylor Cohen took the game over as she scored two goals in a span of 4:17 to put the game out of reach. Cohen took a short pass from freshman Jolie Carl and finished with a shot to the far corner in the 76th minute.

Cohen found the back of the net four minutes later after she took a long cross from DeConick and took a sliding shot to make it 3-1. Cohen scored five goals in two games this week, and is now second in the UAA with points (20).

WashU outshot Rochester 13-3 in the opening half, but neither team found the back. Sophomore Erin Flynn hit the crossbar in the eighth minute, and Cohen had a chance in the 43rd minute but her header was corralled by the keeper.

The Bears outshot Rochester 27-8 and had a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks. Junior Emma Greenfield (10-1-1) made one save and picked up the win in goal.
