Case Western Reserve University graduate student Cassandra Laios led the Spartans during the second day of the 2019 University Athletic Association Indoor Track & Field Championships hosted by Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts.
The Spartan women finished fifth out of seven teams at the meet, scoring 66 points during the two days of competition. Washington (Mo.) won the conference title for the women with 170.50 points, and were followed in the standings by Chicago (155) and Emory (121). The CWRU men finished tied for fifth out of seven teams with 50 points. New York University also scored 50 points throughout the meet. Carnegie Mellon won the conference title for the men with 168 points, followed by Washington (162), Chicago (98) and Brandeis (55).
Laios hit a mark of 13.66 meters to claim the title in the women's shot put. With the win, Laios sweeps the weight throw and shot put at the UAA Championships for the second time in her. She also swept the throwing events during the 2017 Indoor Championships. Laios won the weight throw on Saturday with a toss of 17.92 meters.
Other scoring performances for the Spartan women came from junior Madeline Lindemann in the 3,000-meter run (fifth, 10:08.54), senior Olivia Newman in the 400-meter dash (sixth, 59.78), sophomore Taylor Jackson in the shot put (sixth, 11.35m), junior Melissa Cuellar in the shot put (seventh, 11.08m), sophomore Julie Hines in the high jump (seventh, 1.47m) and senior Jennifer Hoffmann in the one-mile run (eighth, 5:13.27).
The women's 4x400-meter relay team of Hines, junior Vanessa Pasadyn, junior Maria King and Newman also added a fifth-place finish in the event with a time of 4:10.00.
